En muchos lugares de EEUU, la gente está atenta a la aparición de la groundhog (marmota) el 2 de febrero o Groundhog Day. Según la tradición, la pequeña marmota sale de su madriguera en este día, después de su hibernación. Si hace sol y ve su propia sombra, el animal se asusta y regresa a su madriguera, por lo que habrá seis semanas más de tiempo invernal. Si no ve su sombra, indica que la primavera comenzará temprano

Groundhog Day (el día de la marmota) es una simpática tradición estadounidense según la cual se puede predecir supuestamente la duración del invierno. La marmota (en inglés groundhog, o ground squirrel, o woodchuck) despierta de su hibernación el dos de febrero (Groundhog Day). Si hace sol, el animal se asusta al ver su propia sombra y vuelve a su madriguera durante otras seis semanas, lo cual indica que el invierno será más largo. El acontecimiento tiene tal importancia que es televisado a todo el país desde la madriguera más famosa de Punxsutawney, en Pensilvania.
